Cramps in the calf muscle, thigh and feet are common during pregnancy. They usually happen at night in the last trimester. The pain shoots down from the calf to the foot, making the calf muscles taut and very painful. They may feel tender for several hours or even for two to three days, making walking difficult.

Do not worry. Muscle cramps do not damage the leg muscles. They are caused by the deficiency of calcium in the blood. Sometimes cramps could be due to low salt content in the diet.

What to do

  • Eat calcium-rich foods, such as milk and milk products, fish and citrus fruits. Your doctor will prescribe calcium supplements along with vitamin D.
  • Don’t wear high heeled shoes.
  • Massage the affected calf or foot and walk around for sometime once the pain has reduced.
